Many people throw money at quick fixes in order to maintain a youthful appearance, without considering the various factors that affect the aging process.

Lifestyle Factors

Smoking, stress, processed foods, alcohol and harsh sunlight hasten skin aging. One should therefore pay attention to:

  • A healthy lifestyle of correct eating and regular exercise.
  • Nutritional supplements such as vitamins A,C, D and E, the Omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and zinc.
  • Educate yourself about toxins in the home, such as noxious detergents and unhealthy foods.

Surgery vs Nutrition

Risks exist in any form of surgery, including cosmetic surgery. Consider your option carefully before any hasty decision. New processes such as botox, may be less risky in the immediate term, but long-term effects are less certain. On the other hand, most of the nutrients and natural extracts which have been proven to have protective effects are rich in antioxidants, which help combat body tissue degeneration.

Antioxidants

The antioxidant effects of rooibos tea have been established by research conducted at Stellenbosch University. The tea’s antioxidants help prevent damage to the skin that occurs during aging. Rooibos also reduces risk of skin cancer caused by UV sunlight. Green Rooibos is believed to have greater benefit due to the higher antioxidant content.

Other beneficial antioxidants include Coenzyme Q10, Vitamins C and E, berries (especially blueberries) pine bark and grape seed extracts and resveratrol (found in grape skin).

One’s diet may not be a sufficient source of antioxidants and nutrients on its own. Supplements might have to be considered.
